🎃 How to Make Your Carved Pumpkin Last Longer

Halloween season brings with it a flurry of spooky activities, and one of the most cherished traditions is pumpkin carving. The thrill of turning an ordinary pumpkin into a ghoulish masterpiece is unrivaled. But once you’ve poured your creativity into carving, the last thing you want is for your pumpkin to wither away too soon.

That’s why we’ve put together this guide on how to make your carved pumpkin last longer. With a little care and attention, you can extend the life of your pumpkin artistry and keep the Halloween spirit alive for days—sometimes even weeks!

1. Give Your Pumpkin a Bleach Bath

Start by disinfecting your pumpkin. Fill a large bucket with water and add about ⅔ cup of bleach. Submerge your pumpkin completely and let it soak for up to 24 hours. This kills bacteria and mold spores that speed up rotting.

2. Keep Up a Daily Cleaning Routine

Use a diluted bleach-and-water solution to gently wipe the inside and outside of your pumpkin each day. This helps deter mold and bacteria from setting in, keeping your pumpkin fresh and firm for longer.

3. Moisturize the Carved Edges

Carved edges dry out quickly. To slow the process, apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly or vegetable oil to the carved areas. This seals in moisture and prevents shriveling. If you’re lighting your pumpkin, we recommend using battery-powered LED candles instead of real flames to avoid fire hazards.

4. Use a Daily Moisturizing Spray

Keep a spray bottle filled with water and a few drops of bleach. Give your pumpkin a light misting every day, both inside and outside, to keep it hydrated and mold-free.

5. Revive Wilting Pumpkins with an Ice Bath

If your pumpkin starts looking a little sad and wilted, don’t panic! Submerge it in a tub of cold water overnight, making sure the entire pumpkin is covered. Once removed, dry it thoroughly and place it in a cool, shaded spot. This trick can add extra days to your pumpkin’s life.
