What Is a Smudge Stick?
A smudge stick is a bundle of dried herbs, traditionally tied together with natural string and burned as part of a ritual or ceremony. Herbs such as sage, cedar, rosemary, lavender, and pine have long been used for cleansing and healing practices across many cultures around the world.
Although smudging is often associated with Native American sacred ceremonies, the burning of herbs for physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing has existed for centuries across many continents and traditions.
What Is Smudging?
Smudging is the practice of burning sacred or aromatic herbs to cleanse the energy of a person, home, or space. The smoke from the herbs is believed to help clear stagnant or negative energy while creating a calm, grounded, and peaceful atmosphere.
Many people use smudging as part of meditation, relaxation rituals, spiritual practices, or simply to refresh the energy of their surroundings.
Smudging can help create a sense of peace, clarity, and emotional balance. Many people describe the experience as feeling similar to a “spiritual shower” — a way to reset the mind, body, and environment.
